National News

  • Raghuram G. Rajan has been appointed as the new Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) succeeding Dr. D. Subbarao. Mr. Rajan was formerly the Chief Economic Advisor of Indian Finance Ministry.
  • The Rajya Sabha has rectified the Companies Bill, 2012 which was passed by the Lok Sabha few months ago.
  • Report published that the NET Direct Tax collections went up by 10.37 percent during the April-July period of the current fiscal year (2013-14).
  • Communal violence took place in Kishtwar region of Jammu & Kashmir.
  • The Lok Sabha passed the Food Security Bill. Under this program, 67 percent population of India will get subsidised food grains every month.  After a week, the Rajya Sabha has also passed the Bill by voice vote.
  • Prime Minister Monmahan Singh and PM of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay made talks in New Delhi. India announced a financial package worth Rs. 5000 crore for Bhutan.
  • The largest blast furnace of India, Durga became operational at its Rourkela Steel Plant, Odisha.
  • India’s first indigenous, INS Vikrant floats out at Coachin Shipyard.
  • Indian submarine, INS Sindhurakshak rocked by serial explosions and sinked at the Naval dockyard. INS Sindhurakshak was one of the India’s 10 Russian Kilo-class diesel-electric submarines.
  • Deepak Sandhu became the first woman Chief Information Commissioner of India.
  • RBI gave clearance Kerala Government to launch a financial institution following the principles of Islamic finance. Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation will float the Cheraman Financial Services Limited (CFSL) to function as a non-banking finance company.
  • India and Iraq signed four important MoUs in New Delhi including crucial agreement in the field of energy and water resources. These MoUs have been signed in the Presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Iran’s PM Nouri al-Maliki.
  • Co-founder and master mind of banned Indian Mujahidden (IM) has been arrested from India-Nepal border.
  • Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettle Bill has been passed by the Lok Sabha.
  • India’s first full-fledged military communications satellite, GSAT-7 has been launched from the Kourou spaceport of French Guiana, South America.
  • According to latest report, India’s external debt has touched 390 billion dollar at the end of March 2013.
  • The Union Government has referred an Amendment Bill on the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
  • India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth has been slipped further to 4.4 percent in the first quarter (April-June) of 2013-14.

  • Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has been elected as the new President of Mali.
  • Navi Pillai, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said that a decisive turn is being taken toward authoritarianism by Sri Lanka after the war against LTTE.
  • Robert Mugabe has been sworn as the President of Zimbabwe.
  • US President Barack Obama cancelled a talk about summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin as Russia decided to grant asylum to Edward Snowden.
  • Ex-Prime Minister of Bhutan, Jigmi Thinley resigned from the Parliament. He is the first person in Bhutan to quit the legislative body.
  • Michel Djotodia has been elected as the President of Central African Republic.
  • Former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has been charged with murder and criminal conspiracy in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case.
  • Bradley Manning, the former  US soldier and whistleblower has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for providing secret files to WikiLeaks.
  • President of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif hold talks in Islamabad covering the matters of Afghan peace process, bilateral relations and regional situations.
  • The 22-nations from Arab League opposed the proposed Western military attack against Syria.
  • Scientist of an international team discovered a massive canyon which is about 750-km long and 800-metre deep  hidden under Greenland’s ice sheets.
  • Paragua has rejoined to South American regional group. The country lost its membership temporarily after it impeached its President.
  • Microsoft bought the Finnish mobile maker Nokia at a price tag of 7.17 billion dollar.
  • The G-20 summit 2013 held in St. Petersburg, Russia.
  • The BRICS group has made a progress towards the creation of a 100 billion dollar Currency Reserve Fund (CRF). The members of BRICS group are Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
  • Diana Nyad of USA became the first person to swim across Florida Straits from Cuba without any shark cage or flippers.

  • PV Sindhu has created history by becoming the first Indian woman singles player to win a medal at the World Badminton Championships in Guangzhou, China.
  • Rimil Buriuly, Deepika Kumari and Laishram Bombayla Devi won the Gold medal at the World Cup Archery 2013.
  • Briton Mo Farah won the Gold in the men’s 10000m at the IAAF World Championship 2013 in Moscow, Russia.
  • Ratchanok Intamon and Lin Dan are the women’s singles and men’s singles titles winners of World Badminton Championship respectively.
  • Team Red Bull racer Sebastian Vettel won the Bengian Grand Prix Formula One championship 2013.
  • England clinched the Ashes trophy 2013 beating Australia by a 3-0 margin.
  • South Korea beat India 4-3 in the final of the Asia Cup hockey championship 2013 in Ipoh, Malaysia.
  • Mary Ann Gomes of WB won the National women’s premier chess title 2013 at Kolkata.
  • Missy Franklin of USA became the first woman to win six Gold medals in a single World Championship at the 15th FINA World Swimming Championship 2013 in Bercelona.
