  • Abdullah Yameen has been elected as the new President of Maldives. He is the half-brother of ex-President Maumoon Gayoom.
  • Oxford dictionary announced the word ‘Selfie’ as the 2013 word of the year. Selfie is defined as a photograph that one has taken of oneself by smartphones or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.
  • The United Nations has announced January 22 as the date of international conference (Geneva-2) to resolve the Syrian crisis.

  • Radek Stepanek won Davis Cup for Czech Republic after defeating Dusan Lajovic of Serbia.
  • Lionel Messi received the 3rd Golden Shoe Award as the top league scorer in Europe for his 46 goals in the season of 2012-13.
  • Virat Kohli equals fastest 5000-run record by West Indies’s Vivian Rechards in the first ODI against West Indies.
  • Indian won the bid to host the FIFA under-17 World Cup in 2017.
  • Team India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the ICC’s People Choice Award for 2013. He is the second Indian to win such award after Sachin Tendulkar.

Prize and Award Winners

  • Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and eminent scientist Prof. C.N.R. Rao have been chosen for Bharat Ratna. Tendulkar has become the first sportsperson and the youngest recipient of the award.
  • Malala Yousafzai has been awarded 2013 United Nations Human Rights award.
  • British PM David Cameron has been presented with The Sikh Award 2013 citation for his services to Sikh community. He is the 1st serving UK Prime Minister to visit the Golden Temple.

Science and Technology


  • A study conducted by World Wide Web Foundation that India is the 56th position in internet freedom.
  • US space agency, NASA, launched its unmanned mission named as Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) to study the Red Planet’s atmosphere for clues as to why Earth’s neighbor lost its warmth and water over time.
  • A computer in Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, has been declared as the 44th fastest machine in the world. It is capable of 719 trillion calculations per second.
  • Researchers have identified the coldest place on Earth which is a high ridge in Antarctica on the East Antarctic Plateau where temperatures in several hallows can dip below minus 133.6 degree Fehrenheit on a clear winter night.
  • China has launched its first moon rover mission, Jade Rabbit, which is the 3rd in the world after those of USA and the former Soviet Union.
