National News

  • The first women’s Government Medical College of Independent India at Khanpur Kalan in Sonepat, Haryana inaugurated by Mrs. Sonia Gandhi.
  • Hon’ble President Pranab Mukherjee appointed former CBI Director Ashwani Kumar and senior Congress leader S.C. Jamir as Governors of Nagaland and Orisha respectively.
  • Around 60 lakh pilgrims coverage at the Maha Kumbh Mela, Allahabad held every 12 years.
  • Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano visited to India praised Indian civil nuclear program and tightening of laws to check nuclear proliferation.
  • Supreme Court put ban on Italian Ambassador Daniele Mancini from leaving India for failing to honour his commitment to bring back the two accused Italian marines.
  • Union Cabinet gave approval to a diluted version of Anti-rape Bill.
  • The maiden flight of the submarine variant of the Indo-Russian Supersonic cruise missile, BraMos was successful from pontoon in the Bay of Bengal.
  • Maulana Sayed Raabe Hasani Nadvi has been elected as the President of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) for the 5th consecutive term.
  • The third Anti-submarine warfare (ASW) corvette named INS Kiltan has been launched in Kolkata.
  • The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) successfully conducted an ignition test of an indigenous cryogenic engine. The test boosted the prospect of success of the GSLV-D5 launch which will be carried out in July 2013.
  • Hon’ble President Pranab Mukherjee gave his assent to the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2013.
  • Karnataka-based Manipal University has entered into a first of its kind pact with Beijing Institute Of Technology, China.
  • S. Gopalkrishnan, the co-founder and co-Chairman of Infosys, took over as the President of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for 2013-14 succeeded Godrej Group Chairman Adi Godrej.
  • The Agni-II ballistic missile has been successfully test-fired from the Wheeler Island of the Orisha coast.
  • Lt. Cdr. Abhilash Tomy of the Indian Navy became the first Indian to circumnavigate the globe non-assisted. He took 150 days of continuous sailing abroad INSV Mhadei to achieve the milestone.


International News

  • According to China’s General Administration of Customs (GAC), India’s exports to China fell by 30 percent in February 2013.
  • Uhuru Kenyatta became the Kenya’s President.
  • The Human Development Report of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) for 2013 put India’s HDI value for the last year at 0.554 and ranks at 136th place among 187 countries.
  • Jorge Mario Bergogilo of Argentina has been elected as new Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He is the first from the Americas to become the Pope.
  • Li Keqiang has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of China.
  • China became the world’s 5th largest weapon exporter after the USA, Russia, Germany and France.
  • A new constitution has been approved through a referendum in Zimbabwe by curbing the powers of the President.
  • The fifth BRICS Summit was held in Durban, South Africa in 2013.
  • Tammam Salam has been named as the Prime Minister of Lebanon.

  • Australia Hockey team won the Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament 2013 held in Ipoh, Malaysia.
  • Tine Baun of Denmark created history by becoming the oldest All-England Open Badminton singles winner.
  • Mushfiqur Rahim became the first Bangladeshi batsman to hit a double century at Galle, Sri Lanka.
  • West Zone won the Deodhar Trophy 2013 for the 12th time.
  • Rafael Nadal of Spain won the Indian Wells ATP Masters title 2013.
  • Hosts India won the test series beating Australia by 4-0.
  • Sebastian Vettel of Team Red Bull won the Malaysian Grand Prix Formula One title 2013.
  • Murali Kumar of Indian Navy won the Mr. India overall title at the sixth National senior bodybuilding championship in Kochi.
  • Serena Williams clinched the title of the WTA Miami Open Championship 2013. Andy Murray of Britain won the men’s title.
  • Magnus Carlsen of Norway won the World Chess Candidate Tournament 2013 in London.
  • Rahi Sarnobat became the first Indian pistol shooter to win a Gold in a World Cup.
  • Naraynan Srinath of India won the Asian junior boy’s title 2013 in Sharjah, UAE.
  • Wade Ormsby of Australia won the Panasonic India Open Golf tournament 2013 in New Delhi.
  • Rupesh Shah clinched the title at the Asian billiards championship 2013 held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

News on Prize and Award

  • Usain Bolt of Jamaica won the World Sportsman of the Year Award for the 3rd time. 
  • Malayalam poetess Sugathakumari has been chosen for the Saraswati Samman 2012 for her poetry collection ‘Manalezhuthu’.
  • Navneet Kaur Dhillon has been crowned Miss India 2013.
  • Belgian Mathematician Pierre Deligne has been chosen for the prestigious Abel Prize in Mathematics for 2013.
  • Asha Bhosle was conferred the Pandit Hridaynath Lifetime Achievement Award for her great contribution in music.
  • Dr. U.R. Rao has been inducted into the prestigious Satellite Hall of Fame, Washington by the Society of Satellite Professionals International. He became the first Indian to get such achievement. 

60th National Film Award:
  • Best Film - Paan Sing Tomar
  • Best Actor – Irfan Khan for ‘Paan Sing Tomar’ and Vikran Gokhle for ‘Anumati’
  • Best Director – Tigmanshu Dhulia for ‘Paan Sing Tomar’.

News on Science and Technology

  • World’s most powerful telescope ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array) became operational in Chile. It has a vision 10 times sharper than that of the Hubble Space telescope.
  • Indian-origin scientist Ram Ramamoorthy created a first-of-its-kind highly intelligent robot that can play rock-scissor-paper with human. It can respond to gestures and anticipate human actions with the help of Microsoft Kinect, a motion sensing device.
