National News

  • Hon’ble President, Pranab Mukherjee has leaved for a 4-day state visit to Vietnam during which New Delhi and Hanoi are expected to sign agreements on oil exploration and air connectivity.
  • The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has predicted that Indian economy will grow at a rate of 5.6 percent in 2014 while developing economics as a whole will see 4.5-5 percent rise in economic expansion.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the ‘Make in India’ campaign.
  • Narendra Modi has leaved on his maiden visit to the US after taking over as the Prime Minister of India. During his 5-day visit, he will address the 69th Session of United Nations General Assembly.
  • Hindi road drama, ‘Liar’s Dice’ directed by Geetu Mohandas, has been nominated for the best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards (Oscars) which will be given away in Los Angeles in 2015.
  • India has created history with the successful placing of its Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) into Mars orbit. India has become 1st country in the world to achieve this feat in the first attempt. 
  • The Chairman of ISRO, K. Radhakrishnan has told Press that India has joined hands with China for the first time to develop remote sensing satellites .
  • China’s President Xi Jinping has begun his three-day state visit to India by signing two agreements and one memorandum of understanding in Ahmedabad on the 1st day.
  • India and China have signed 13 agreements in New Delhi as India raises concerns over the stand-off at the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh. The President of China has also made a special announcement of a new route to Kailash-Manasarovar.
  • The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suffered a setback in by-polls, losing 13 of the 23 seats it held in U.P., Gujarat and Rajasthan.
  • Justice Handyala Lakshminarayanaswami Dattu has been administered oath as the 42nd Chief Justice of India (CJI).
  • The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and AIADMK Supremo, Ms. Jayalalithaa has become the first sitting Chief Minister to be disqualified as a legislator and from her post, after Bangalore trial court convicts her in an 18-year old disproportionate assets case. 
  • O. Pannerselvam, a staunch loyalist of AIADMK supremo Ms. Jayalalithaa, has been sworn as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
  • The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Prithviraj Chavan has resigned from his post after his government loses its majority.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched “Swachh Bharat” mission in the country on the 145th birthday anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said that India has recovered  from the economic slowdown.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi  has unveiled a blueprint for the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) on Jayprakash Narayan’s birth anniversary.

International News

  • Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko vows greater autonomy for the separatists east as Russia withdraws most of the troops. 
  • Rizwan Akhtar has become the new head of Pakistan’s ISI.
  • The two-day G-20 Labour and Employment Ministerial Meet has begun in Melbourne, Australia.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has addressed in Hindi the 69th Session of UN General Assembly at its headquarters in New York.
  • Former Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani has been sworn as the new President of Afghanistan. 
  • Bamiyan, the Afghan town where two ancient statue of the Buddha were blown up by the Taliban in 2001, has been elected to be the SAARC cultural capital for a year beginning April, 2015.
  • In a landmark referendum, Scots have rejected the option of Independence from the United Kingdom with 55.3 percent ‘No’ and 44.7 percent ‘Yes’ for the motion.
  • The General Debate at the UN General Assembly (UNGA69) has been opened at the UN headquarters in New York, USA. Afghanistan has signed Bilateral Security Agreements (BSA) with the USA with an aim to allow some US troops to remain in the country till 2015.
  • Pope Francis has marked in the opening of a synod, a meeting of nearly 200 bishops in Vatican. 
  • The Communists Party of China has warned of serious consequence if demonstrations by pro-democracy campaigners in Hong Kong continue.

  • The 6th edition of Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) 2014, hosted by India, has been commenced. 
  • USA has won FIBA Basketball World Cup 2014 by defeating Serbia in Madrid, Spain.
  • The 17th edition of Asian Games has been opened at Incheon, South Korea.
  • Saurav Ghosal has become the 1st Indian to win historic Silver medal in Squash in the Asian Games.
  • Jitu Rai has given India its first Gold of the 17th Asian Games in Incheon at the event of men’s 50m Pistol.
  • The Sports Ministry has finally agreed to give the Arjune Award to boxer Manoj Kumar.
  • Uogeshwar Dutt has won first Asiad Gold in 28 years for India after he has defeated Tajikistan’s Zalimkhan Yusupov in the men’s 65 kg freestyle final.
  • Indian cricket captain M.S. Dhoni is the sole Indian sportsman to figure on the Forbes’ list of the world’s most valuable athlete brands.
  • Leander Paes of India and Marcin Matkowski of Poland have won the ATP Malaysian Open men’s doubles title in Kualalampur.
  • Europe has defeated USA to win the 40th Ryder Cup.

  • Asia’s version of Nobel Prize, the Tang Prizes have been given to Gro Harlem Brundtland, Yu ying-shih, James P. Allison, Tasuku Honjo and Albie Sachs in various categories for the year 2014..
  • India’s Sachin Tendulkar and Australia’s Steve Waugh have been selected as Bradman Honoree 2014 by Bradman Foundation.
  • Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev has been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the House of Lords, London, U.K.
  • Bollywood Actor, Shahrukh Khan has been conferred with Global Diversity Award 2014 at the house of Commons in Britain.

  • Scientists have reported the discovery of the first evidence of water ice cloud on an object outside our own solar system, about 7.3 light-years away from the earth.
  • ISRO Mars Orbiter has sent down 1st day pictures that has shown the grainy orange Martian terrain.
  • A 5000-year-old stepwell has been found in one of the largest Harappan cities Dholavira in Kutch.
